Rider Safety Corner

(Motorcycle Hand Signals)

Simple hand signals, used with your bike's light signals, remain the most effective way to communicate your intentions to drivers and riders around you. Review the basics:

  • Turn on your motorcycle's turn signals in the direction you intend to go.
  • A hand signal will both get attention and emphasize your planned movement.
  • Since many signals are not self-cancelling, get into the habit of turning off your signal after your turn.
  • Use your signals well ahead of time.
  • Remember engine braking alone will slow your bike without warning drivers behind. Touch your brakes lightly to signal your deceleration.

Visit the Motorcycle Safety Foundation for more tips and information about safe riding and risk management.

American Legion Riders help local family after house fire in Veguita
by Ungelbah Daniel-Davila |

When Joel Brown, New Mexico American Legion Riders state vice president, heard about the fire that took the home of Veguita residents, Frank Ortega, and his son, Johnny Leyba, on Dec. 19, he knew he had to do something.

He called Aaron Dean, chairman of the New Mexico Operation Wounded Warrior program and former New Mexico American Legion Riders state president.

According to their website, the New Mexico Operation Wounded Warrior (OWW) program is operated by the New Mexico American Legion Riders (NMALR), a motorcycle association organized through the American Legion known for their charitable work, and makes donations to veterans and servicemen and is the largest of its kind.

Through OWW, the Legion Riders collect hygiene, comfort and personal items, and use monetary donations to purchase requested items, gift certificates, or make donations, which they distribute where needed.

When Brown and Dean, from American Legion Post 80, Chapter 18 in Grants, found out about the hard times Ortega and Leyba, who are both veterans, had recently fallen on, they decided to take action.

Last Wednesday, Dean and Brown rolled into the Belen American Legion post like a couple of leather-clad St. Nicks, bearing two checks for $750, each to help the father and son get back on their feet.

"We're a bunch of vets that like to ride and support other vets," said Brown. "We're here to support everybody."

"I'm very, very grateful and surprised. It's good to know we do have back up," said Ortega.

Dec. 5th Legion Meeting
Posted: 11/19/2011 11:34:44 PM
All, At the Dec. 5th Legion meeting, we will be asking for nominations and election to the Board of Governors to replace Doug Robertson. Doug had to step down due to personal time constraints. Since there are less than six months remaining on his term, the new member will serve the full two years, plus 5 months. This position is open to Legion members only since the Auxiliary and SAL are already represented. The position of BOG member is one of the most important elected positions in the post. You, along with the other 4 members are responsible for the day to day running of the Canteen and grounds. Hiring, policy, building maintenance, canteen financing etc all fall under the direction of the BOG. They meet once a month (unless circumstances require more frequent meetings) and are the key players in general post decisions. While this position does not normally require a lot of personal time, you must be willing to put it in when necessary. It is important to be in touch with the post and to be effective you must have your finger on the pulse of the membership. Please consider a run for this BOG opening. It is a great way to be involved with your post and to have the opportunity to make a difference. Rick

Meeting Monday, Nov 14 at 7pm
Posted: 11/10/2011 10:22:51 AM
Post 136 Family, As mentioned in the Post News e-mail on Tuesday, we are holding an all member meeting next Monday, Nov 14, at 7:pm. All Legion, SAL, and Auxiliary members are invited and encouraged to attend. Many are aware of plans to radically remodel the post to better serve our present members, allow for growth, and help assure we meet our future needs. We have an opportunity to explore three options, make an informed decision, and begin the process of planning, financing, and accomplishing these goals. At the Monday meeting, each plan will be dissected, discussed, and the good bad and ugly of each plan will be explained. We hope to come to a decision on what we would like to do, so we can begin deciding how to do it. We are not talking about a new paint job or different lighting. We are going to discuss major changes, bringing the post up to federal ADA requirements, expanding and/or designing a better use of our space and making it a more family friendly environment. As with most organizations, 10-20% of the people do the work and support the stated mission, while the rest stand on the sideline. It will be near impossible to accomplish what is needed with those kind of numbers. Attendance at this meeting will tell us a lot about that support. If we stand still, do not plan for the future and do not mold our Post image into a forward thinking group of Veterans and supporters, we stand to become what many posts already are. Mediocre. Be there and be a part. Rick
