(2/03-05/2012) MID – WINTER FORUM
(The Importance of the Mid-Winter Forum)
The Mid-Winter Forum offers every member, especially local Post leaders and chairmen, the opportunity to learn more about The American Legion, its programs in addition to how and why we function the way we do as an organization. This year’s Forum is no exception.

We strive to schedule “hot button” topics whenever possible. For example: recently there has been an upsurge of concern over The American Legion’s trademarked names and emblems. The plural tense is used because The American Legion owns more than just its name and emblem; the names and emblems of every program is owned by the National organization and National is very judicious in protecting each. Whether it’s American Legion Baseball, the Sons of the American Legion, the American Legion Riders, or our scholarship book “Need a Lift?” National Headquarters guards their use in order to protect the sanctity and reputation of each. Why? Each is worth millions therefore National has an obligation to protect the organization’s assets.

There is a simple procedure which must be followed in order to use the organization’s trademarked names and emblems including use on websites, articles of clothing, signs, etc. Unfortunately there has been an increase of misunderstandings, miscommunication, outright false rumors and speculation circulating over the use of the Legion’s trademarks.
For that reason Department has arranged for National Judge Advocate Phillip B. Onderdonk, Jr. to attend the opening session of the Forum at 8 o’clock Saturday morning, February 4 at Leavenworth Post 23.

Judge Advocate Onderdonl will also address recent problems Posts have experienced with the IRS and the Post’s tax exempt status. Other National Staff providing support during the Forum will be Assistant Membership Directors Sean Sparks and James Woodson whose topics will be how to revitalize your Post.

See page 8 of this issue for this year’s complete Mid-Winter schedule. If you are a Post or District Officer, or Chairman, are thinking about getting more active in the organization, or simply just curious, plan to attend this year’s Forum. You’ll have the opportunity to meet some great Legion Family members like yourself and you’ll leave informed and entertained.

Dec. 5th Legion Meeting
Posted: 11/19/2011 11:34:44 PM
All, At the Dec. 5th Legion meeting, we will be asking for nominations and election to the Board of Governors to replace Doug Robertson. Doug had to step down due to personal time constraints. Since there are less than six months remaining on his term, the new member will serve the full two years, plus 5 months. This position is open to Legion members only since the Auxiliary and SAL are already represented. The position of BOG member is one of the most important elected positions in the post. You, along with the other 4 members are responsible for the day to day running of the Canteen and grounds. Hiring, policy, building maintenance, canteen financing etc all fall under the direction of the BOG. They meet once a month (unless circumstances require more frequent meetings) and are the key players in general post decisions. While this position does not normally require a lot of personal time, you must be willing to put it in when necessary. It is important to be in touch with the post and to be effective you must have your finger on the pulse of the membership. Please consider a run for this BOG opening. It is a great way to be involved with your post and to have the opportunity to make a difference. Rick

Meeting Monday, Nov 14 at 7pm
Posted: 11/10/2011 10:22:51 AM
Post 136 Family, As mentioned in the Post News e-mail on Tuesday, we are holding an all member meeting next Monday, Nov 14, at 7:pm. All Legion, SAL, and Auxiliary members are invited and encouraged to attend. Many are aware of plans to radically remodel the post to better serve our present members, allow for growth, and help assure we meet our future needs. We have an opportunity to explore three options, make an informed decision, and begin the process of planning, financing, and accomplishing these goals. At the Monday meeting, each plan will be dissected, discussed, and the good bad and ugly of each plan will be explained. We hope to come to a decision on what we would like to do, so we can begin deciding how to do it. We are not talking about a new paint job or different lighting. We are going to discuss major changes, bringing the post up to federal ADA requirements, expanding and/or designing a better use of our space and making it a more family friendly environment. As with most organizations, 10-20% of the people do the work and support the stated mission, while the rest stand on the sideline. It will be near impossible to accomplish what is needed with those kind of numbers. Attendance at this meeting will tell us a lot about that support. If we stand still, do not plan for the future and do not mold our Post image into a forward thinking group of Veterans and supporters, we stand to become what many posts already are. Mediocre. Be there and be a part. Rick
