The SAL Children's Christmas party is scheduled for next Sunday, Dec 18, at 3pm. This is for all members and their children and grandchildren. Santa will be there, games, prizes, toys, cookies etc. Please bring the kids on out.

At the Dec. 5th Legion meeting, we will be asking for nominations and election to the Board of Governors to replace Doug Robertson. Doug had to step down due to personal time constraints. Since there are less than six months remaining on his term, the new member will serve the full two years, plus 5 months. This position is open to Legion members only since the Auxiliary and SAL are already represented.

The position of BOG member is one of the most important elected positions in the post. You, along with the other 4 members are responsible for the day to day running of the Canteen and grounds. Hiring, policy, building maintenance, canteen financing etc all fall under the direction of the BOG. They meet once a month (unless circumstances require more frequent meetings) and are the key players in general post decisions. While this position does not normally require a lot of personal time, you must be willing to put it in when necessary. It is important to be in touch with the post and to be effective you must have your finger on the pulse of the membership.

Please consider a run for this BOG opening. It is a great way to be involved with your post and to have the opportunity to make a difference.

Post 136 Family,

As mentioned in the Post News e-mail on Tuesday, we are holding an all member meeting next Monday, Nov 14, at 7:pm. All Legion, SAL, and Auxiliary members are invited and encouraged to attend. Many are aware of plans to radically remodel the post to better serve our present members, allow for growth, and help assure we meet our future needs. We have an opportunity to explore three options, make an informed decision, and begin the process of planning, financing, and accomplishing these goals.

At the Monday meeting, each plan will be dissected, discussed, and the good bad and ugly of each plan will be explained. We hope to come to a decision on what we would like to do, so we can begin deciding how to do it. We are not talking about a new paint job or different lighting. We are going to discuss major changes, bringing the post up to federal ADA requirements, expanding and/or designing a better use of our space and making it a more family friendly environment.

As with most organizations, 10-20% of the people do the work and support the stated mission, while the rest stand on the sideline. It will be near impossible to accomplish what is needed with those kind of numbers. Attendance at this meeting will tell us a lot about that support. If we stand still, do not plan for the future and do not mold our Post image into a forward thinking group of Veterans and supporters, we stand to become what many posts already are. Mediocre.

Friday, Oct. 28th, we will have a surprise welcome home for Kansas Army National Guard Captain Christopher Sanders at 6:30 PM in our Post dining room. The dining room is open from 5:30 to 8:00 PM, so come and enjoy dinner while we let Chris know how much we appreciate his service, and to let his wife, Stacy, know that we also appreciate her sacrifice while her husband was deployed.

Sunday, Oct 30th, we will pick up the trash in the ditches along Patriot Guard Highway (a two mile stretch along Hwy 53 starting at the West Mulvane City limits). Dining room is open from 8:30 to 11:30AM, so come and enjoy breakfast with us before we depart for the highway at 11:00AM.

6th Annual Post 136 Halloween party will be held this Sat, Oct 29, starting at 7pm. Bring a party dish to share and dress up stupid. We always have a few games and prizes and the Mulvane DJ's will be providing music.

10/22/11 - Saturday, Mulvane Post 136 invites all veterans and their families to our post for Veterans Appreciation and Fun Day. We'll have a horseshoe tournament beginning at 1000. RSVP to Doug Lehman (dlehman4@cox.net or 519-4204) to sign up. Lunch at noon will include free. Brats, Polish Sausage, and chips. Non Alcoholic beverages are free. Draws are only $1.00! Quilts of Valor will provide a display and a drawing for a quilt. (Suggested donation is $1.00 per ticket). Bring your lawn chair or grab a seat on a hay bale for some stories by the fire.

Post 136 Family,

This is the first of what we hope will be continuous updates on what is happening at Post 136. There are still a lot of e-mails to be captured and if you know of someone not receiving the mailings, please ask them to get with me and I will add them to the list. An e-mail will go out anytime there is news and following meetings. Due to the difficulty of opening attachments because of differing software levels, all communications will be in e-mail form.

This past 18 months, our Post has seen a number of changes in leadership. Commander Art Beale has stepped back from his Post duties due to health and is recovering at home. He has handed the duties of Commander to 1st Vice Commander Jake Defrees. While we continue to pray for Arts full recovery, it is important we not forget about the mission of the American Legion.

THIS WEEKEND:

· There will be an informal ceremony and flag retirement after the Riders meeting (approximately 5:00 PM). This ceremony is being held out of respect of Patriot Day, 9/11, in order remind everyone of the flag we have defended and still need to defend today.

MONDAY

Ladies Auxiliary meeting-7:00 PM

· American Legion meeting-7:00 PM

This will be a very important meeting for Legion members. We need maximum participation.

1. Nomination and election for new 1st Vice Commander-duties include helping with membership and most important, must be willing and able to step up as Commander in the event the present Commander is unable to fulfill the duties. This has happened twice in past 18 months so we need someone capable and involved with the Post. NOTE: 2nd Vice Commander has yet to be filled and nominations are open

2. Nomination and election for Board of Governors position. This is to fill the vacated position that as held by now Commander Defrees. Must be a veteran Legion member and the term will be until Dec, 2012

3. Nomination and possible election of another BOG position of which the term will begin in Oct and will last 2 years.

While it is not an actual job description item, it is extremely important that whoever accepts these positions is involved. While none are extremely time consuming, more commitment than a 1 hour a month meeting is required to make it effective. Please give these positions serious thought. It is an honor to serve your post and you should be honored to be selected.

Finally, we are in the planning stages of more post improvements. More details will be coming after the meetings. It’s time to get excited about your Post again! Be a part of it.

(8/20/11 – Saturday) ALR 136 (Mulvane) invites all ALR to join us. The city of Mulvane has invited the ALR to lead the Old Settlers parade again this year. We will do a ride thru and make 2 or 3 stops to pass out candy. We will fly American flags, Kansas flag and all service flags. All ALR members and their passengers are invited to ride. Please bring your flags! Pre staging and briefing will be at the Mulvane post 136 at 10:00am. Depart at 10:15. Ride captains will be Jerry (Jarhead) Allen and Jim (JD) Duncan.

Come early as the post will be serving a breakfast buffet starting at 8:00am to 9:30am consisting of biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs and sausage, coffee and orange juice. Price will be $6.00. Also, after the parade, the SAL will be serving brats, hotdogs and hamburgers. There will be a Horseshoe tournament beginning at 1:00pm, so bring a partner and join in the fun. If you are a little over weight you will leave a few pounds lighter if the 100 degree weather continues. The good news is there will be $1.00 dollar draws to compensate for the weight loss.
